Garden Club News

Community

On May 7th, the Garden Club and the Foundation held their first joint effort, a community Garden Tour.  The date of the tour was determined back in January.  Volunteers were found from among Garden Club members to assist at each home with parking, questions and guidance thru the properties.  Six homeowners volunteered to open their gardens to the public.  Signs were made, maps and directions were printed.  A corresponding Mother’s Day Boutique was planned, where tickets the day of the tour would be sold.  The homeowners had prepped their yards for the best possible presentation.  Heavy rains this winter made the gardens flourish and mild sunny weather in March and April brought out the blooms and the shining leaves.

One week before the date, the news forecast a drastic change in the weather for the entire weekend of the event.  Since all the legwork was already done and gardens were ready, the decision was made to hold the event as planned, hoping that a little rain wouldn’t keep the community indoors.  The forecast on the morning of the tour was more encouraging with intermittent showers predicted. In the end, Mother Nature held the winning hand, and she did provide about an inch of welcomed rainfall.

On the bright side, even though the turnout was low, those hardy souls who got out in the rain with raincoats and umbrellas and enjoyed the gardens, made some new friends, talked to some old friends and made the best of the situation.  The feedback has been good and will encourage us to give this event another try next year.  The proceeds from the event went to the Foundation and will be spent on Beautification.

Special thanks to the six families who participated: The Munks on High Mountain, the Burkles on High Vista, Karen Sherman on Oak Ridge, The Lonsdales on Canyon Country, the Pickens on North View Lane and the Van Grols on North View Court.  Also, thank you to the Garden Club volunteers: Joy Meeker, Pat & Roy Buntin, Judy Dunn, Francoise Geiser, Katy Freese, Wendy Smith-Rogers and Steve Rogers, Denise Haase, Karen Henderson, Donna Hinke, Robin Raben, Rosemary Tulis and Joanne Anglin. Your support was much appreciated.

Next month, on June 16th, the club will visit Waterwise Botanicals on Old Highway 395, where we will get an informational presentation and some time to wander through the acres of plants they have available for sale.  For more info about the club, please contact Lisa at (760)749-8723.
